If translated literally, cockle hat in "his cockle hat and staff (IV.5.25) would make no sense to a Romanian reader; knowing that in the countryside, in some areas, hats and fur caps may be adorned with coloured beads ['margele'] or with a feather ['pana'], some of the translators used these words instead of the equivalent of cockle: cusma-i cu margele (Dumitriu 1955); tichia cu margele (Dumitriu 1959); pana palariei (Banus,, Calin 1948).
