Over the course of our journey, our vessel would be raised 85 feet up from sea level in the Atlantic to the level of the Gatun Lake in Panama, then travel through the manmade Culebra Cut, then be lowered back down to sea level to emerge in the Pacific Ocean.
It must pass through the man-made Culebra Cut before a set of locks takes it down 10 metres to Miraflores Lake.
Leaving the lake after a couple of hours or so, we were back in the diggings, and the most challenging part of the whole project - the Culebra Cut, where, quite literally, they moved mountains to get through the continental divide.
