Dakota Territory, and incarcerations at Camp Kearney in Davenport, Iowa; themes related to the ways Dakota men, women, and children attempted to survive, including the use of literacy, religion and Christianity, and the role of Dakota scouts in the punitive campaigns that followed the war; and the years 1866 to 1869 following the prisoners' release from Davenport and the removal of Dakota families from Crow Creek.
