For a jolly display, you can't beat a mixture of pinks, oranges and reds - here I'd recommend the frilly pink Angelique, vibrant orange Princess Irene and old fashioned bright red Hollands Glorie which belongs to the Darwin tulip group, one of the most reliable year-on-year performers.
Shorter single early tulips such as 'Apricot Beauty' also work well in pots, as do taller single late and Darwin tulips including 'World's Favourite', a hot orange-red type, or the lily-flowered T.
The loose, pale blue clusters of striped squill won't do for the garden what Darwin tulips do -- or would do if the deer wouldn't eat them -- but they are welcome nonetheless.
