vaughani, and several heteromyid taxa, including
Dipodomys gidleyi, Oregonomys cf.
The only species of rodent captured in the grassland grazing exclosure was Ord's kangaroo rat,
Dipodomys ordii (Table 4).
The study concentrated on a simple community of two species of kangaroo rats (
Dipodomys deserti and D.
Eight montane voles (Microtus montanus; 2 males, 6 females) were captured in May and three Ord's kangaroo rats (
Dipodomys ordii; 1 male, 2 females) were captured in August.
Increases were documented for
Dipodomys merriami (55%, P=0.014), Chaetodipus hispidus (196%, P=0.011), Perognathus flavus (526%, P=0.001), Peromyscus maniculatus (339%, P=0.001) and Reithrodontomys megalotis (230%, P=0.005) (Table 3).
We used standard laboratory methods to assess agonistic behavior of Merriam's kangaroo rats,
Dipodomys merriami.
In a Sonoran Desert community of four granivorous species (Arizona pocket mouse, Perognathus amplus; Merriam's kangaroo rat,
Dipodomys merriami; round-tailed ground squirrel, Spermophilus tereticaudus; and Harris's antelope squirrel, Ammospermophilus harrisii), we concluded that two mechanisms were jointly responsible for community organization.
Dipodomys spectabilis (banner-tailed kangaroo rat) is a large kangaroo rat whose current distribution is limited to Upper and Lower Sonoran lifezones from northern New Mexico southward into Mexico.
Captures of Baiomys taylori (n=8), Onychomys leucogaster (n=6),
Dipodomys ordii (n=2) and Spermophilus spilosoma (n=1) were not sufficient for statistical analysis.
Schiffman (1994) found giant kangaroo rat (
Dipodomys ingens) activity increases the diversity of exotic grass species while decreasing the diversity of native species in a California grassland and the North American beaver (Castor canadensis) is notable for its extensive alteration of resources (Naiman, 1988).
This flea is associated with Ord's kangaroo rat (
Dipodomys ordii), although it also has been reported on P.
