Drugs known as anticholinergics (such as Ditropan, Detrol, Vesicare, Enablex, Gelnique, Oxytrol and Toviaz) suppress involuntary bladder contractions to help with urgency, frequency and urgency-related leakage.
Other drugs on the risk list include older antidepressants such as Doxepin and the bladder control treatment Ditropan.
Each of the drugs - along with others such as doxepin antidepressants and Ditropan bladder control pills - has "anticholinergic" effects which block a chemical transmitter called acetylcholine.
A recent randomized, prospective, controlled clinical trial in 45 children aged 7-14 years with palmar hyperhidrosis showed excellent outcomes with oxybutynin (Ditropan), with more than 85% experiencing at least moderate improvement in sweating and 80% gaining improved quality of life (Pediatr.
Some drugs to watch out for include the following (and their generics): diphenhydramine (Benadryl); certain antidepressants, such as amitriptyline; some diuretics and other drugs for high blood pressure, including losartan (Cozaar) and valsartan (Diovan); and drugs for an overactive bladder, such as oxybutynin (Ditropan), solifenacin (VESIcare) and trospium (Sanctura).
