Sex of shrimps was determined by examination of the endopodite morphology of the second pair of pleopods (Ismael & New, 2000).
For each lobster image, both the red/blue (R/B) ratio and intensity for the endopodite and abdominal segment were analyzed.
brucei: exopodite of A2 2-segmented with 4 setae, mandibular palp 1-segmented with 4 setae, the first segment of endopodite P2 with setae on inner side, abdominal somites with continuous row of spines edged on dorsal and discontinuous (of female) in the medial row of some longer spines on ventral side.
furcosus would correspond to the print of the Notostraca anterior zone joined together with the no 5 and 6 endites, possibly more no 3, of the thoracopod endopodite no 1.
Stage [IVA.sub.1] animals were "more postlarval" with respect to the tail region (e.g., formation of uropodal endopodite and acquisition of the postlarval number of terminal setae on the telson).
Paratypes, [female], 1.29 mm of length; general aspect of female as in Figure 4a, 4b; right 5th leg of female as in Figure 5 a, 5b where it can be seen that the endopodite corresponds to half the size of the first exopodite.
Lateral margin of endopodite terminating in spine; endopodite with prominent median ridge terminating in premarginal spine.
2D) Coxal and basal endite with serially developed strong spines and multiple setae; endopodite with 2+3 spines; a strong subterminal seta.
Each maxillule [ILLUSTRATION FOR FIGURE 4C OMITTED] has a three-segmented endopodite located distolaterally; a large, toothed, mesially directed basal endite; and a smaller setose coxal endite that is also mesially directed.
The Brazilian specimen features agree with those of the typical form (Figures 1-10): head and carapace surface covered with long hairs; head broad and without supraocular depression; antennule and antenna densely ciliated; anterior seta on the penultimate segment of the female's first trunk limb toothed; postabdomen with seven to ten lateral feathered teeth and one short bident tooth; ephippium with two eggs, and covered with brown polygonal cells; males hairy, with bent antennules, first trunk limb with large hook on the endopodite and long seta on the exopodite.
