E·pi·rus

(ĭ-pī′rəs)

An ancient country on the Ionian Sea in present-day northwest Greece and southern Albania. It flourished in the 3rd century bc and was later a Roman province. An independent state after ad 1204, Epirus was conquered by the Turks in the 15th century.
