"It's very complicated to look at all of the microbes in the gut and make sense of what they may be doing in
food allergy, but by using computational approaches, we were able to narrow in on a specific group of microbes that are associated with a protective effect," said co-first author Georg Gerber, MD, PhD, MPH, co-director of the Massachusetts Host-Microbiome Center and chief of the Division of Computational Pathology in the Department of Pathology at the Brigham.
"The loss of these bacteria acts as a switch that makes children susceptible to
food allergy," the recent study suggests.
The results showed that even mild AD linked with an increased prevalence of
food allergy when it appeared early and persisted, but more severe AD with this onset and recurrence pattern led to an even greater prevalence of
food allergy, said Dr.
