Item Unique Identification, or IUID, is a capability that requires a
globally unique identifier for items, along with the ability to consistently and accurately distinguish any item from another by using high-capacity machine-readable 2-D marking.
In 1999, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files were found to contain a
Globally Unique Identifier (GUID) in their headers.
Similarly, Microsoft has incorporated into its software a method of identifying each document with a
globally unique identifier (GUID) that includes information about the machine on which it was produced.
