Ho·myel'
(hō′myĕl) or Go·mel (gō′məl, -myĕl) A city of southeast Belarus north of Kiev, Ukraine. First mentioned in 1142, it was controlled alternately by Lithuania and Poland before passing to Russia in 1772.
