Topping the list for the most strikes with Air Force aircraft is the
Horned Lark. Swallows are involved in the most strikes for the Navy, and Mourning Doves for civil aviation.
Researchers found that grazed plots had more native plants than ungrazed ones and that all three bird species studied -- Western meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta),
Horned lark (Eremophila alpestris), and Grasshopper sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum), had positive associations with native plant abundance.
Therefore, species that prefer sparse vegetation (e.g.,
horned lark) would have increased nest success following fire while species that prefer dense vegetation (e.g., Cassin's sparrow) would have decreased nest success.
The species which were most affected within our study for this region include the American Kestrel, Black-Crowned Night-Heron, Double-Crested Cormorant, Eastern Phoebe, Hermit Thrush, Ruby-Crowned Kinglet, Savannah Sparrow, Warbling Vireo, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, the
Horned Lark, and the Northern Shrike (Tables 3 and 4).
The streaked
horned lark, Mazama pocket gopher and Taylor's checkerspot butterfly survive on only 3 percent of the historic 91,000-acre prairie habitat that remains, most of it inside the 414,000-acre base.
As two rare North American thrushes were found in Scotland and Ireland last week, could the Bardsey bird be a
Horned Lark, the American form?
These birds have earned the unfortunate distinction of a spot on Audubon's list: American Bittern, Black-throated Sparrow, Boreal Chickadee, Common Grackle, Common Tern, Eastern Meadowlark, Evening Grosbeak, Field Sparrow, Grasshopper Sparrow, Greater Scaup,
Horned Lark, Lark Sparrow, Little Blue Heron, Loggerhead Shrike, Northern Bobwhite, Northern Pintail, Ruffed Grouse, Rufous Hummingbird, Snow Bunting and Whip-poor-will.
(2011) reported 40 bird species from Shimshal including one lark species,
horned lark (Eremophila alpestris).
Among them are four that are candidates for listing under the Endangered Species Act (ESA): two rare butterflies--Taylor's checkerspot (Euphydryas editha taylori) and the Mardon skipper (Polites mardon)--the streaked
horned lark (Eremophila alpestris strigata), and the Mazama pocket gopher (Thomomys mazama).
Each type of habitat required by the greater prairie chicken also serves as important habitat for many other species, including grazers such as deer and prairie birds such as the western meadowlark, Henslow's sparrow, upland sandpiper, and
horned lark, so if workers here can keep the prairie-chicken happy, they'll be meeting the needs of other species as well.
These species occupy a prairie ecosystem and include the mardon skipper and Taylor's checkerspot butterflies, the streaked
horned lark, and the Mazama pocket gopher.
Lapland longspurs were observed building nests on 3 June, and the first full-clutch nest of a
horned lark was found on 11 June.
