The original
Hubble Deep Field offered professional astronomers a glimpse into the earliest views of that process, and with diligence and effort we may travel in that direction.
Cunow continued her work on the age and metallicity gradients and the dust extinction of disc galaxies at intermediate redshifs in the
Hubble Deep Field. She improved the measurements and presented the results at the conference in Rome in October.
Keck turned the
Hubble Deep Field from a pretty picture into a scientific treasure trove."
Release of the first
Hubble Deep Field. HST resolves quasar host galaxies.
The image, the result of 3.5 days of observations with the recently installed Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope, is several times as sensitive as the
Hubble Deep Field images (SN: 3/1/03, p.
BODY OF EVIDENCE Using one of these large-format infrared cameras on a high-precision telescope in Parnal, Chile, astronomers recently examined the
Hubble Deep Field South, a patch of sky that previously had been viewed for a solid week in visible light by the Hubble Space Telescope.
However, by the mid-1990s there was still no sign of these objects, even in the
Hubble Deep Field, the deepest image that had ever been taken of the sky at visual wavelengths (July issue, page 42).
That's twice the number of background galaxies detected in a landmark set of images--the
Hubble Deep Field North--taken from a different, smaller patch of sky by WFPC-2 in 1995.
THE ORIGINAL
Hubble Deep Field image--the result of plumbing a nondescript patch of Ursa Major for 10 days and nights with the Hubble Space Telescope--changed the course of extragalactic astronomy when it was released in 1996 (see page 42).
Many astronomers have used the data compiled from that region of sky, known as the
Hubble Deep Field North, as a basis for further studies at a variety of wavelengths (SN: 1/20/96, p.
