Dugongs' last relatives were Stellar's sea cows (Hydrodamalis gigas), which were wiped out by hunters just 36 years after being discovered by scientists.
The best known case is the Steller's sea cow (Hydrodamalis gigas), which was discovered in 1741 and extirpated by 1768.
