Specifically, males on average had larger volumes and higher tissue densities in the left amygdala, hippocampus,
insular cortex, putamen; higher densities in the right VI lobe of the cerebellum and in the left claustrum; and larger volumes in the bilateral anterior parahippocampal gyri, posterior cingulate gyri, precuneus, temporal poles, and cerebellum, areas in the left posterior and anterior cingulate gyri, and in the right amygdala, hippocampus, and putamen.
By contrast, females on average had higher density in the left frontal pole, and larger volumes in the right frontal pole, inferior and middle frontal gyri, pars triangularis, planum temporale/parietal operculum, anterior cingulate gyrus,
insular cortex, and Heschl's gyrus; bilateral thalami and precuneus; the left parahippocampal gyrus, and lateral occipital cortex.
Rejected lovers also had more activity in the
insular cortex, a brain region associated with physical pain and anxiety.
Differences were found between the two groups' responses in the
insular cortex, where visceral and somatosensory input are known to be integrated.
Role of the anterior
insular cortex in integrative causal signaling during multisensory auditory-visual attention.
During the viewing of both pain videos, the anterior cingulate cortex, bilateral
insular cortex, and the somatosensory cortex were commonly activated.
The
insular cortex, a structure that monitors the state of the heart and other internal organs, assumes primary responsibility for branding certain tastes as off-limits, according to research directed by neuropsychologist Federico Bermudez-Rattoni of the National Independent University of Mexico in Mexico City.
Recent evidence suggests that postpartum depression can increase amygdalar response to infant stimuli and decrease bilateral amygdala-right
insular cortex connectivity [101].
The pair reached their conclusions after discovering that when the volunteers lied about their feelings, the brain's
insular cortex was altered.
Using this gaping model, the Guelph researchers, along with University of Toronto professor Paul Fletcher, discovered that serotonin release in the visceral
insular cortex may be responsible for the sensation of nausea.
Washington, May 22 ( ANI ): Researchers have uncovered rare brain cells in monkeys, which can be tied to self-awareness and empathy in humans.ax Planck scientists found that the anterior
insular cortex is a small brain region that plays a crucial role in human self-awareness and in related neuropsychiatric disorders.
"In patients with FM, our findings strongly implicate the
insular cortex as being a key node in the elevated intrinsic connectivity," added Dr.
