The fourth day of the Hebrew month of
Iyyar and Israel is celebrating its 71st year.
It was named after Rabbi Hayyim (Abu Fadil) bin Hananel bin Abraham El-Imshati, who dedicated an ancient inscription of Torah scroll, which Jewish pilgrims had flocked on the new moon of
Iyyar month, said historians Shelomo Dov Goitein and Mordechai Friedman in their book India Traders of the Middle Ages: Documents from Cairo Geniza that published in 2008.
As per Shulhan Arukh, Orah Hayyim 580:2, Jewish tradition marks 10
Iyyar (once marked by fasting) as the date of these calamitous events..

On April 12, 1951, the Parliament of the State of Israel passed a resolution proclaiming the 27th day of the Hebrew month of Nissan as "the Holocaust and Ghetto Uprising Remembrance Day--a day of perpetual remembrance for the House of Israel." The Knesset chose that date because it falls between that of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising (which began on the first day of Passover) and the Israel War of Independence Remembrance Day (on the fourth of
Iyyar).
