Nathaniel Currier (1813-1888) and James Merritt Ives (1824-1895) were publishers, not artists.
In 1857, Currier formed a partnership with James Merritt Ives, a self-trained artist who had been the firm's bookkeeper for five years and was related to the Currier family by marriage.
In 1850 Currier went into business with James Merritt Ives, and by 1857 all of the prints issued by the company bore the Currier & Ives imprint.
