In the late 1970s, Marr and Knight (1983) examined food habitats of Golden Eagles on 38 territories in eastern Washington and found nearly equal numbers of avian and mammalian prey, <1% of jackrabbits (Lepus californicus and Lepus townsendi) and ground squirrels (Urocitellus spp.), and 42% Yellow-bellied Marmots (Marmota flaviventris), which was unusually high (Knight and Erickson 1978).
