Bradley (1994: 179) classifies Nuosu as Northern Loloish within the Burmese-Lolo group (Tibeto-Burman), whereas the Chinese tradition labels Nuosu as the northern dialect within the Yi nationality, along with five other dialects.
The Lahu language belongs to the Central Loloish (= Yi) branch of the Lolo-Burmese subgroup of the vast Tibeto-Burman family which, together with Chinese, constitutes the Sino-Tibetan linguistic stock.
