Celebrated for their extraordinary richness and luminosity of colour,
Matisse's vibrant cut-outs were the final triumph of his career.
Kate O'Donoghue, curatorial trainee at NationalMuseumsLiverpool, said: "Henri
Matisse is a world-famous artist and this exhibition includes many of his iconic images, such as The Snail and the Blue Nudes."
This is the first hint that this exhibition is about the psychology that informs
Matisse's art, and the emotions and intuitions that are bound up with the objects he collected and used in his work.
The painting is one of around 60 landscapes painted by
Matisse during a visit to the Mediterranean island on his honeymoon.
Diebenkorn remained enthralled for the rest of his life, even traveling to Russia to see
Matisse's work at the Hermitage and Pushkin Museum and poring over his extensive collection of
Matisse catalogues.
Inspired by a similarly titled collage by
Matisse (who used the term "decoupage" instead), and assisted by a French kindergarten class, she wrote a fable about a bird-prince and a fish-woman.
Even those deeply familiar with
Matisse's paintings will thrill to explore this remarkable side of his practice, which bears the artist's signature energy, elegance, and color, but seen here in lithographs, etchings, pochoir (stencil) prints, and linocuts.

The exhibition, to run from March 25 to April 22, will include prints from one of
Matisse's most complicated and successful printmaking projects, Florilege des Amours Ronsard, illustrating the love poems of 16th century French Renaissance poet Pierre de Ronsard.
