Begun in 2000, the Music Genome Project is an ongoing exercise in analyzing music, both old and new, according to a complex taxonomy, including up to 450 different factors.
Indeed, despite the nextgen nature of its Music Genome Project, services like Pandora bear remarkable resemblance to the general attributes of old-school radio.
In the early years, while it labored to build the Music Genome Project that powers its music recommendation engine, Pandora struggled to find both a business model and funding, to the point where it had to ask employees to work without pay for almost two years.
They log about 400 different aspects of each song into their database, called the Music Genome Project. The database is a pun on the Human Genome Project, which took more than a decade to analyze the human genetic code (complete set of hereditary information).
