[Alteration (influenced by Greek lemma, husk) of French névrilème : névr-, nerve (from Greek neuro-, neuro-) + Greek eilēma, veil (from eilein, to wind, turn; see wel- in Indo-European roots).]
INTRODUCTION: Schwannoma originates from the sheath of spinal cord roots-- neurilemma or Schwann cells (so it is mainly called neurilemmoma or Schwannoma) and make one third of primary spinal cord tumors.
(1) This lesion is primarily made u p of proliferated endoneural and perinenral connective tissue, neurilemma cells, and regenerating neuraxes; it is not neoplastic in origin.
Together the axons form a distinct optic nerve surrounded by neurilemma that is intimately associated with the basement membrane [ILLUSTRATION FOR FIGURE 4C OMITTED].
