Four families of marsupial are represented in the Australian deserts: the rabbit bandicoot (Thylacomyi-dae), the dasyurid marsupial carnivores (Dasyuridae), the marsupial moles (Notoryctidae) and the kangaroos and wallabies (Macropodidae).
The family Notoryctidae is only represented by the blind marsupial mole (Notoryctes typhlops), which is relatively abundant in all the sandy areas of the Australian deserts and occupies the same ecological niche as Grant's golden mole (Eremitalpa granti) in southern Africa.
