And if you find this 1941 poem by Ogden Nash still funny, I know for sure you ain't sensitive to the worst catastrophe to befall humanity.
I'm not particularly a fan of 20th century limericks, but there's one by Ogden Nash that I use every so often in the couples counseling I do.
As Clint Eastwood said to Gene Hackman in "Unforgiven" before shooting him in the face with a shotgun: "Deserve's got nothin' to do with it." The sun shines on the good and the bad, but as poet Ogden Nash observes, "The rain, it raineth on the just, and also on the unjust fella; but mostly on the just because the unjust steals the just's umbrella." Allison Ogden Nash, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy, said: "Enforcement is one of the methods we can use to change people's behaviour but it needs to be fair and it needs to have the public on our side."
Most people are familiar with Ogden Nash's doggerel connecting priests, beasts and three-alarm fires (an updated version below).
His humorous side is portrayed by selections from Eric Whitacre's "Animal Crackers" - specifically panther, cow, canary and firefly - taken from the comic verse of Ogden Nash:
Perelman, Vernon Duke and Ogden Nash; and artworks he collected from colleagues, including a stash of shadow puppets.
