For species represented by a preponderance of small individuals, each stranded animal was assigned a maturity state on the basis of length relative to published length estimates: humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) (Rice, 1963), common minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata; hereafter 'minke whales') (Boyd et al., 1999), harbor porpoises (Read and Gaskin, 1990; Lockyer, 1995), harbor seals (Boulva and McLaren, 1979), hooded seals (Cystophora cristata) (Reeves et al., 1992), gray seals (Halichoerus grypus) (Bonner, 1981), and harp seals (Pagophilus groenlandicus) (Reeves et al., 1992; Hammill et al., 1995).
We therefore conducted four feeding trials with a captive polar bear to investigate how 2 novel untested diets such as Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) and harp seal meat/fat (Pagophilus groenlandicus) are digested and energetically utilized.
The main prey of polar bears (Ursus maritimus) are ringed seals (Phoca hispida), bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus), and harp seals (Pagophilus groenlandicus) (Lono 1970; Smith 1980), and polar bears are thus the ultimate apex predator in the arctic marine ecosystems.
On the international scene, the alliance of Greenpeace, RSPCA, television and Brigitte Bardot in the 1970s took up the photogenic cause of harp seal Pagophilus groenlandicus pups bludgeoned to death by Norwegians on the Canadian pack-ice.
The ringed seal (Phoca hispida), harp seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus), hooded seal (Cystophora cristata) and the gray seal (Halichoerus grypus) are stragglers to the area whilst the walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) has occasionally been recorded.
