Mel`a`no`chro´ite


n.1.(Min.) A mineral of a red, or brownish or yellowish red color. It is a chromate of lead; - called also phœnicocroite.

This deposit is the type locality for five of the known 22 chromate species (cassedanneite, crocoite, embreyite, phoenicochroite, and vauquelinite).
This mineral, blood-red and tabular in habit, was initially named melanochroite, and later (1839) changed to phoenicochroite. The latter name is in reference to the dark red color, not black as implied by the former name.

Lead phases detected by X-ray d iffraction include synthetic hydrocerussite ([Pb.sub.3][([CO.sub.3]).sub.2][(OH).sub.2]), synthetic crocoite ([PbCrO.sub.4]), synthetic phoenicochroite ([Pb.sub.2][CrO.sub.4]O), synthetic anglesite ([PbSO.sub.4]), and possible synthetic plattnerite ([PbO.sub.2]).
