In coast live oak woodlands of California, Parker and Muller (1982) used reciprocal transplant experiments to document higher shade tolerance in Bromus diandrus and Pholistoma auritum, two species apparently facilitated by oak canopies, than in Avena fatua, a species generally excluded from subcanopy habitat.
