The male friars, often preaching friars, were schooled in Latin, trained in biblical exegesis and the interpretation of learned texts and glosses written by Church Fathers and later learned theologians.
The Franciscans' sister order of preaching friars, the followers of St Dominic, is the subject of Joanna Cannon's ground-breaking and no less richly illustrated study.
Of the contributors, only Burgard correctly calls the young Luther a "friar." Augustinians were not "monks" but mendicant preaching friars aiming to live out Acts 2:42, as I show in Lutheran Forum (Spring 2008).
