These southern seas are frequented by several species of Petrels: the largest kind,
Procellaria gigantea, or nelly
chlororhynchos albatrosses and white-chinned
Procellaria aequinoctialis and spectacled P.
(18,39,40) Seabird studies show dietary lipid assimilation efficiency >80% for neutral lipids in white-chinned petrels (
Procellaria aequinoctialis) and black-footed albatross (Phoebastria nigripes), while rockhopper penguins (Eudyptes chrysocome) showed values of 62% and 45% for 2 radiolabeled neutral lipids.

Procellaria aequinoctialis forage widely in the Southern Ocean during day and night while incubating eggs, with no influence of moon phase (Weimerskirch et al., 1998).

Only two species of seabirds were caught during setting of the longline: 12 white-chinned petrels (
Procellaria aequinoctialis) and 19 black-browed albatrosses; no seabirds were caught during hauling.
