By type, the market has been segmented into asynchronous DRAM, FPM, EDO, BEDO, SDRAM, and RDRAM. FPM (Fast Page Mode) DRAM is the largest segment owing to their extensive application in laptops and personal computers for reduction of access time and power consumption.
The FTC did so because: (1) the RDRAM agreements covered more technologies; (2) RDRAM royalty rates tended to decline for high volumes and over time; (3) "market participants viewed the RDRAM royalties as too high for RDRAM to achieve a major presence in the market" (30); and (4) "it is Rambus's own unlawful conduct that prevents perfect replication of the 'but for' licensing picture, plausible doubts should be resolved against Rambus." Rambus's role in the setting of memory standards in the 1990s and its subsequent introduction of its RDRAM standard, have been a bone of contention in the DRAM market for years.
"RDRAM memory, coupled with the HP EV7 Alpha microprocessor, provides the next level of advanced supercomputing necessary for mission-critical, data intensive applications," said Laura Stark, vice president of Rambus' Memory Interface Division.
In typical usage, a 1.7 GHz Pentium 4 coupled with the low-cost SDRAM will only reach speeds equivalent to a 1.4-1.5 GHz Pentium 4 equipped with Rambus RDRAM.
For even more power, the 700C comes with a 1.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor; 256 MB PC800 RDRAM memory; 32 MB of NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX 200 AGP graphics; a 40 GB Ultra ATA 100 hard drive and integrated Ultra ATA controller; a 20X minimum/48X maximum CD-ROM; and a SoundBlaster AudioPCI 128D.
-- Compaq Evo Workstations -- The new Compaq Evo Workstation W6000 and W8000 offer industry leading technologies such as: support for up to two Intel 1.7 GHz Xeon processors, Ultra ATA and Ultra 160 SCSI drives, and ECC RDRAM memory.
The new modular rack-mount design allows for easy expansion with a 12 unit chassis that includes 5 units for the host computer offering dual Intel Pentium III processors; 512 MB of RDRAM; 36.7 GB system drive and two 73.4 GB data drives.
Rambus memory, sometimes called RDRAM (Rambus Dynamic Random Access Memory), is the invention of a small Mountain View, Calif., company named Rambus Inc.
"The second quarter was difficult for most personal workstation vendors, who struggled with RDRAM shortages while trying to meet customer demand.
The PowerMate CT desktop computer is the first to integrate the Intel 820 chipset and harness the performance advantages of RAMBUS DRAM (RDRAM) technology, operating at 800MHz.
