In the ladybug beetle Coccinella septempunctata, it has been shown that the spatulate tips of adhesive setae have a high concentration of the protein
resilin, which may be important to resist abrasion, and for optimizing contact zone and stability (Peisker et al.
Resilin is an arthropods protein with elastic and highly stretchable structure.
Samples of wing cord length were measured from the basal sclerite and
resilin patch of the left forewing attachment to the thorax in a straight line to the apex of the wing (Fig.
1976), whereas the center of the inner ligament is composed of abductin, a protein with properties similar to those of elastin and
resilin (Alexander 1966, Kelly & Rice 1967).
Gorb, "Tools for crushing diatomsopal teeth in copepods feature a rubber-like bearing composed of
resilin," Scientific Reports, vol.
Yellow jacket wings have a dot of rubbery material called
resilin toward the wing tip along the leading edge.
Set up with the intention to serve increasing demand in the region for speciality elastomers such as thermoplastics, protein
resilin and polysulfide rubber, the plant is expected to produce approximately 110,000 tons of rubber per year, (using licensed ExxonMobil technology).
The 19 JVs are: Cloro Vinilos del Zulia, Monomeros Colombo Venezolanos, Nitroven, Olefinas del Zulia, Oxidor, Plastilago, Polilago,
Resilin, Pralca, Produsal, Produven, Propilven, Quemica Venoco, Metor, Supermetanol, Super Octanos, Tripoliven and Consortium Propilenos de Falcon (Profalca), and FertiNitro-I which went on stream in 2000.
Moreover, many other silk-like biomaterials such as elastin, collagen, byssus,
resilin, and other repetitive proteins have similar features to spider silk protein.
The proximal section is similar in extensibility to other rubber-like proteins such as
resilin and elastin, but is an order of magnitude higher in strength and stiffness.
The October issue of Nature reports that scientists in Australia have produced a near-perfect rubber from
resilin, the elastic protein which gives fleas their jumping ability and bees the ability to flap their wings 500 million times in a life cycle.
