Outside the tropics, Serenoa repens is found in sandy pine-oak wood understory and Rhapidophyllum hystrix grows on calcareous soils in wet areas in deciduous woods in south-eastern USA.
The smallest is needle palm (Rhapidophyllum hystrix; zones 7, 8, 9, and 12 through 24), which does well except in California's high desert.
