Observations on food habits of four species of spadefoot toads, genus
Scaphiopus. Herpetologica 33:468-475.
Eastern Spadefoot (
Scaphiopus holbrookii) --The Eastern Spadefoot was first recorded in the Stemler Cave area on 30 July 2004 (Week 2006a, INHS 19542) when eight juvenile individuals were observed in the perimeter area of the preserve following heavy rains.
Postembryonic ontogeny of the spadefoot toad,
Scaphiopus intermontanus (Anura: Pelobatidae): External morphology.
Adaptive plasticity in amphibian metamorphosis: response of
Scaphiopus hammondii tadpoles to habitat desiccation.
We also collected five species of amphibians in the Santa Cruz River and Rio Puerco watersheds: American bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana), Couch's spadefoot toad (
Scaphiopus couchi), prairie spadefoot toad (Spea bombifrons), red-spotted toad (Anaxyrus punctatus), and an unidentified Bufo.
The pool is a site that is used for breeding by three species of amphibians; Ambystoma maculatum, Ambystoma opacum, and
Scaphiopus holbrookii.
B., 2002.--Granulomatous dermatitis in a spadefoot toad (
Scaphiopus holbrooki).
Bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana) and Hurter's spadefoot toads (
Scaphiopus hurterii) had high captures between May and November.
These sites have produced 4261 amphibian captures of six different species: one salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum) and five frogs (Rana sylvatiea, Ranapipiens, Bufo cognatus, Pseudacris maculata, and
Scaphiopus bombifrons).
The two missing species were Gastrophryne carolinensis and
Scaphiopus holbrookii, each recognized as being secretive, burrowing anurans that favor habitats with sandy, gravelly, or other loose soils (Conant and Collins, 1998).
