The Original Secession Church, at 5 Wellmeadow Street, is being transformed into Rocknrolla's, which, it's hoped, will become a community hub.
Educated amid poverty at Glasgow University, the young Gilfillan wished to pursue a literary career, but, needing an income, he followed his late father into the ministry of the United Associate Secession Church and in 1836 became minister of the School Wynd church in Dundee, where he would remain until his death forty-two years later.
There, he agreed to try to unite the Scottish settlers: Methodists, some members of the Secession Church and some from the established Church of Scotland.
