LONDON -- GlaxoSmithKline PLC (GSK) was fined 37.6 million pounds ($54.3 million) by the United Kingdom's antitrust watchdog over pay-for-delay deals that held back sales of generic versions of its antidepressant Seroxat.
The fine was handed down by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) which said Glaxo made more than PS50m of payments to companies making cheaper generic versions of its anti-depressant Seroxat to delay them coming to market.
During this period, GlaxoSmithKline plc (GSK), a supplier of Seroxat, an anti-depressant medicine called paroxetine, made payments and other value transfers to suppliers of generic versions of paroxetine, which totalled more than GBP50m.

The studies compared the effects of St John's Wort with placebos and a wide range antidepressants, including Selective Seretonin Re-uptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Prozac and Seroxat.
The drug, made by pharmaceutical giants GlaxoSmithKline, is sold as Seroxat in the UK and Paxil in the US.
I refer specifically, in this instance, to the debacle with Glaxosmithkline and the drug Seroxat. According to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, there is no prospect of a conviction, despite the fact that evidence shows that GSK knew of the dangers with the drug being taken by under 18s.
The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said it remained concerned that GSK failed to raise the alarm earlier over the side-effects of Seroxat.
