(spīr, spī′ər, shpī′ər) also Spires (spīrz)

A city of southwest Germany on the Rhine River south of Mannheim. Founded as a Roman garrison, it was an important ecclesiastical and political center from the 11th to the 16th century. Speyer was ceded to France in 1797 and to Bavaria in 1815.
