The
St. Francis River drainage in eastern Arkansas contains some large blocks of public land, and the area has been part of this family's hunting culture for many years.
The two study reaches, Ditch 10 and Stateline Outlet Ditch, occur in the
St. Francis River watershed of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain (Delta) Ecoregion of eastern Arkansas.
elongatus in neighboring Missouri, including substantial populations in the Missouri, Mississippi, and the lowland
St. Francis River. This sucker is apparently still common in the Mississippi and Missouri rivers in Missouri, but prior to 1900 it was much more common in the upper Mississippi River (Pflieger 1997).
When the Spanish expedition led by Hernando de Soto arrived in what is now known as eastern Arkansas and the
St. Francis River in June of 1541, a scribe described the unknown area: "Along the entire bank of that river and throughout the vicinity, there were numerous fields of corn and a great number of fruit trees, all of which proved the land to be fertile." A part of what is called the "Sunken Lands," a vast swamp created by the New Madrid earthquake of 1811-1812 and the
St. Francis River delta in eastern Arkansas, the county remained economically undeveloped until the 1880s, when drainage programs and the cutting of the virgin forests opened up land to farming.
Two years earlier, in 2010, Mike had seen a narrow-racked buck with numerous stickers while hunting one of his favorite stands, located within 40 yards of the
St. Francis River in Cross County.
