Hydro distilled essential oil from buds of
Syzygium aromaticum was investigated for antioxidant and enzyme inhibition activities.
Summary: Seven compounds have been isolated and characterized from
Syzygium aromaticum namely oleanolic acid lactone (1), AY-sitosterol (2), nigricin (3), flavaellagic acid (4), 2a- hydroxyoleanolic acid (5), 3AY-hydroxy-11-oxo-olean-12-en-28-oic acid (6) and AY-sitosterol 3-O-AY- D-glucopyranoside (7).
Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of essential oils extracted from Cymbopogon winterianus (citronella), Thymus vulgaris (thyme), Cymbopogon citratus (lemon grass), Corymbia citriodora (eucalyptus), Cinnamomum zeylanicum (cinnamon), and
Syzygium aromaticum (India clove) on the development of in vitro S.
For instance, it has been observed recently that plant foods and medicinal plants including Agave attenuate (Rizwan et al., 2012), Impatiens bicolor Royle (Nisar et al., 2012), Capparis deciduas (Zia-Ul-Haq et al., 2011) Moringa oleifera (Atawodi et al., 2010a), Palm oil (Atawodi et al., 2011a, b), Anisopus mannii (Atawodi et al., 2010b), Canarium schweinfurthii oil (Atawodi et al., 2010),
Syzygium aromaticum (Atawodi et al., 2010b) and Hibiscus esculentum (Atawodi et al., 2009a) etc., contained a host of antioxidant polyphenols with demonstrated capacity to chemoprevent oxidative stress-related diseases.
Four out of the nine medicinal plants studied, namely, Terminalia bellirica, Glycyrrhiza glabra,
Syzygium aromaticum, and Phyllanthus emblica reportedly showed preventive activities against Streptococcus mutans--an organism causing dental caries (Chaiya et al., 2013).
