The Ecology of the Arabian
Tahr (Hemitragus jayakari Thomas 1894) and a Strategy for Conservation of the Species.
WE HUDDLED TOGETHER UNDER THE
TAHR HIDE AND OUR WET BLANKETS, SHIVERING THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT.
We all took trophy red stags, and Justin also managed to shoot a beautiful bull
tahr and a great fallow stag.
Twenty-five species of mammals and 170 types of birds are found in a nature reserve covering an area of 1,400 hectares (3,500 acres), including striped hyenas, caracals -- also known as the desert lynx -- and the Arabian
tahr.
Four of them are now considered endangered on a worldwide scale, such as the Arabian
tahr and Blanford's fox (pictured right).
The Central Zoo Authority has designated this zoo for the conservation and breeding of 10 endangered high altitude animal species including Snow Leopard, Red Panda, Tibetan Wolf, Blue Sheep, Himalayan
Tahr, Himalayan Blood Pheasant and Satyr Tragopan.
Key mammal species include the caracal (Caracal caracal) and the Arabian
tahr (Arabitragus jayakari), both endangered, while it is believed possible that Arabian leopard (Panthera pardus nimr) may also survive in the vicinity, although this is unproven.
Each day we'd seen
tahr, several nice bulls among small groups of nannies and kids, but always out of bow range on their inaccessible perches high on the sheer rock faces just below the snow line of Mount Erebus.
After a sumptuous breakfast, we drove to an overlook where we spotted an injured
tahr. Murray called Jim by cell phone to tell him about the
tahr.
