Ti·bet
(tə-bĕt′) or Xi·zang (shē′dzäng′) An autonomous region of western China between the Himalaya and Kunlun Mountains. A center of Lamaist Buddhism, Tibet flourished as a kingdom in the 7th century. Following periods of Han, Mongol, and Manchu rule, it proclaimed independence in 1913 from the Qing Dynasty and fell under Chinese control in the 1950s. Lhasa is the capital.
