Lawrence Livermore sent engine drawings and technical publications in an EDI format to McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento over the Tymnet communications network.
Most of these computerized services are accessed through public international telecommunications networks such as Tymnet. Although access is widely available, in some countries, particularly in Africa and certain parts of Latin America, such networks are either unavailable or uneconomic to use.
The trail eventually showed the intruder had been using a path through the German Datex-P network, Tymnet International Gateway, and the Tymnet switching system to get into the Lawrence Berkeley Labs' computer.
Another network, established at about the same time, but initially for the more limited role of providing access to a proprietary time-sharing service, was the Tymnet. it was described at the Spring joint Computer Conference in 1971.
