Tufted vetch (Vicia cracca) was used as a fodder plant in South Uist, and it was believed a cow that ate it would 'take the bull' more easily - and earlier in the season.
This year classic meadow flowers such as yellow rattle, tufted vetch and red clover are abundant and there is more bird's foot trefoil than I have ever seen in this meadow in nearly 30 years.
They plan to increase the diversity of pollinating plants in pastures using specialised seed mixtures such as bird's-foot trefoil, lesser knapweed and tufted vetch. One new mix has been formulated specifically for the project by a seed company.
