Rhodesia had in the past received oil through three primary routes: by road, across the Beit Bridge from South Africa; by rail, through Mozambique from either South Africa or the port of Lourenco Marques (now Maputo); and by pipeline, carrying crude oil from Beira to the Rhodesian refinery in
Umtali. (12)
The most successful raid of the year [1976] was on 9 August against Nyadzonya, one of the terrorists' main camps about 50 miles east of
Umtali. Our recces had been monitoring it for some time, and it was a busy operational area.
From there they travelled to
Umtali (now Mutare) where, on reaching Rhodesian territory, they were able to receive improved medical care and rest.
Two years later, the
Umtali to Harare sector opened and when the two lines were connected in 1902, over 3,500km of continuous rail track existed from Cape Town, via Botswana, and through Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) to the port of Beira on Mozambique's Indian Ocean seaboard.

I felt like Doris, at age 14, at the garden party at Old
Umtali Mission, drinking tea and eating cake with black people who for once aren't servants, chattering away to two grave old men who tolerate her, until one at last says gently: "You see, I am very old and you are very young." This she describes as a special moment, "when one is alive, and noticing, as if injected unexpectedly with some substance whose gift is that you should see clearly." Another such moment, in Under My Skin, is seeing her parents in a cloud of smoke as a pair of pathetic, gray, old people, stuck together: "I am never going to be like them.
John Chavafambira (or Chawafambira) - if that is indeed his name - was born near
Umtali (now Mutare) in eastern Zimbabwe, around 1904.
Engel and Cuthbertson (1939) recorded penicillatus from '
Umtali' [= Mutare] District, 'Southern Rhodesia' (= Zimbabwe).
Such suburbs as Avondale, Greystone Park Cotswold, Malborough and Hatfield (all in Salisbury), Killarney, Hyde Park and Kensington (Bulawayo), Yeovil (
Umtali) and Ascot, Windsor Park (both in Gwelo) were named after places in the United Kingdom.
These were Anglican nurses who worked in
Umtali in the east.
Leaving the Portuguese, the mosquitoes, flies and fevers behind without regret we boarded the famous Beira railway, which had cost hundreds of lives to construct, and halted at
Umtali in Northern Rhodesia.
