Wran·gel Island

(răng′gəl, vrăn′gyĭl)

An island of northeast Russia in the Arctic Ocean northwest of the Bering Strait. It is named in honor of Ferdinand Petrovich von Wrangel (1796-1870), a Russian explorer who made an unsuccessful attempt to locate the island (1820-1824).

A second reintroduction on Vrangel Island in 1975 used 20 muskoxen obtained from the USA (Nunivak Island, Alaska).

Additional reintroductions were achieved by relocating muskoxen from the Vrangel Island and Taimyr Peinsula populations (Table 1).

Muskoxen from the Taimyr Peninsula adapted well to relocation sites in central Siberia, and those from Vrangel Island established viable herds in eastern Russia.
