One of the most common sharks in the GMR is the whitetip reef shark, Triaenodon obesus, which is found in shallow coastal waters (Grove & Lavenberg 1997).
They then used state-of-the art statistical methods to combine the uncertainty associated with each of these methods and arrive at a more robust long-term population prediction for two GBR shark species -- the grey reef shark and the whitetip reef shark.
These include the shark species commonly known as the gray reef shark, oceanic whitetip shark, blacktip reef shark, tiger shark, whitetip reef shark, tawny nurse shark, great white shark, whale shark, scalloped hammerhead shark, great hammerhead shark, smooth hammerhead shark, and leopard shark.
Whitetip reef shark populations are currently at 20% of unfished levels, and could be down to 5% within two decades.
This close-up of an eye - taken just eight inches from the snarling face of a Whitetip Reef Shark - is one of my favourite photographs.
