This textbook introduces the fundamentals of speech and hearing science, covering breathing, laryngeal function, velopharyngeal-nasal function, and pharyngeal function of speech production; acoustics; the acoustic theory of vowel production; the theory of consonant acoustics; speech acoustics measurement and analysis;
acoustic phonetics data; speech perception; neural structures and mechanisms for speech, language, and hearing; and swallowing.
"Landmarks in this effort," Kingston sites, "are the acoustic-auditory definitions in Preliminaries to Speech Analysis (Jackobson, Fant, & Halle 1952), the articulatory alternatives in Chapter 7 of The Sound Pattern of English (Chomsky & Halle 1968), and most recently, the combined acoustic and articulatory definitions in The Sounds of the World's Languages (Ladefoged & Maddieson 1996), and
Acoustic Phonetics (Stevens 1998)" (Kingston, 402).
The present study will be a useful contribution to the existing knowledge in the area of
acoustic phonetics with regard to English lexical stress.
In his book, Resonance in Singing, Donald Miller describes formant tuning "as a practical application of
acoustic phonetics to the special conditions that pertain in the realm of opera, with its extended range, loud orchestra, and heightened sense of drama." (2) He goes on to clarify that "formant tuning refers to adjustments in the frequencies of the first two formants (=vowel modification) to arrive at an optimal resonance configuration for a given [F.sub.0] [fundamental frequency] and vowel combination." The aim of this project is to analyse lesser-known Finno-Ugric languages using modern experimental tools of
