He said the major problem for the

Areca nut is used in many traditional remedies and is credited with having anti-depressant,3 anti-inflammatory4 and anti-hyperlipidaemic5 properties, and cytotoxic, insecticidal and anti-microbial activities,6 in addition to acting as an analgesic4 and immunomodulator.7 Studies have also attributed a variety of negative health outcomes to the use of areca nut-containing products, including development of oral submucous fibrosis (OSF),8-10 oral,11,12 pharyngeal and oesophageal,12 hepatocellular,13 stomach14 and cervical cancers,15 metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.16 Areca nut-containing products are also often contaminated with
aflatoxin, a mycotoxin which is a secondary metabolite produced by certain strains of filamentous fungi such as Aspergillus (A.) flavus and A.
The study by researchers from Egerton University revealed that the broiler feeds contain
aflatoxins, whose level is higher than that recommended by regulatory bodies. The study published in the journal, Livestock Research for Rural Development, 2019, found that most broiler starters contain
aflatoxin level of 90 per cent and broiler finisher, 95 per cent.
Study further found out that
aflatoxin production was mainly caused due to inappropriate storage conditions.
But what most Filipinos don't know is that homemade peanut butter, although cheap, might be laden with
aflatoxin, a form of mold known to be a human carcinogen or something that causes cancer.
On the other hand, toxigenic nature of the fungus was confirmed by its
aflatoxin producing potential.
Aflatoxin standards were acquired from Sigma Chemical Co.
The researchers determined the extent of
aflatoxin degradation in aflatoxin-inoculated peanuts after treating the samples at three distances--5 cm, 7 cm and 10 cm--from the light strobe and at different times of exposure.
