Two important sources of Cu in the Nile Delta are: (i) applications of Cu-based liquid fungicides, and (ii) use of CuS[O.sub.4] as an algicide in treating and controlling problematic macro-algal blooms in the Nile, especially during summer (Abdel-Moati, El-Sammak 1997).
In one study, hydrogen peroxide was used as an algicide to remove cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins in a stabilization pond, resulting in a significant reduction in their abundance (Barrington et al., 2013).
Exposure to high levels of free Cu(II) may occur, for example, from swimming in water that has been recently treated with a copper-containing algicide. Occupational exposure to copper often occurs.
