The name refers to the design of the altazimuth mounting which although simple in principle, and usually made from plywood, is very stable in use.
With a telescope that rides on an altazimuth mounting, such as a Dobsonian, no effort is required to maintain this orientation as the scope tracks objects across the sky.
But even for those, it is very nice to have motorized tracking combined with the ergonomic benefits of an altazimuth mounting. And most Go To scopes can also be used in equatorial mode, usually with the aid of an optional wedge, for those who want to pursue astrophotography.
