(ə-pĕn′dĭks) Plural appendixes or appendices (ə-pĕn′-dĭ-sēz′) A tubular projection attached to the cecum of the large intestine in humans and some other mammals. ♦ Inflammation of the appendix is called appendicitis (ə-pĕn′dĭ-sī′tĭs). ♦ Surgical removal of the appendix is called an appendectomy (ăp′ən-dĕk′tə-mē).
